They walked through an unpaved path down from the grand Abigor castle to the beautiful inner dock. The night sky was ever-present, stars alive and glowing brightly as winds pushed waves across the shore. He held her hand tightly as they walked the dimly lit wooden dock, hearing it creak softly at each step. They were passionate lovers in a classic romantic scene. He hated the cliché and smiled at her. From his coat pocket, he produced folded sheets of paper and started to unravel them.

I found these at the library. It reminded me of you so I thought I would read it for you. With her approval, he began. The first verse made her smile, the following made her grin, and after a few more, she was bursting with laughter. He, too, smiled, grinned, and eventually laughed with her. She talked about its lack of structure, cliché verses, and obscure language. He laughed agreeably and said it was dull, lifeless, and utterly useless material. They went on and on, remorselessly going line by line, giving each word ridicule, each rhyme its own horrid adjective.

The scene was perfect, lovers laughing and having a wonderful time at the most pristine backdrop. He took her in his arms and kissed her, both having to hold their laughter long enough for a short kiss. She took the unraveled sheets of paper from his hands, crumpled them, and with a decisive toss, sent it to a watery grave. Put it out of its misery, she said, What awful being wrote such nonsense? Jay smiled one of those rare glorious smiles, stared deeply into her eyes and said You wouldn’t have laughed and thrown it away had I told you I wrote that at the library while I was thinking of you.

She stepped back, turned around, and walked away without a word. She made her way back up the path, the breeze blowing her beautiful hair. He leaned against the railing, looked down at the black depths below, and proceeded to enjoy the moment as best he could. The stars were burning in the dark sky, the moon gently gazing down as the waves moved the dock slowly up and down. Perfection. In the depths where no eye shall see nor lips shall read lay his words penned, crumpled, and tossed away.
