My Space

Posted by Allan in Verse -- Rage on September 27, 2010 9:37 am

No, this was my space –
a place for the unpopular, uncool, outcasts.
This was a sacred place of solitude,
a space of information
interesting to myself and a few others.

We were shunned as geeks, called nerds,
picked on for playing video games,
mocked for spending our free time
in front of a computer.
You were so proud that you had lives.

Now look at you with your Halo and Madden
All cool and popular with your iPods
and that teeny tiny knowledge you proudly
call computer literacy.
No, this was my space.

Instead of being with all of you,
I chose this space. I belonged.
I expressed myself to peers who understood
because they too wanted nothing to do with you
and none of you were here.

Now here you are, shallow as ever,
invading my space with your social life,
crying about how nobody understands you
while still picking on the geeks and nerds.
You can go to hell.

Here you are with your OMGs and LOLs,
all-caps and your AOL. You talk hardware
’cause you’re a gamer, which is suddenly acceptable.
You double click on something and call it hacking.
You bastardize my space and call it your own.

Yes, I am bitter and I can’t expect you to understand –
you’re much too dense for something like this
but if you’re so damn cool, so damn popular
then why do you still feel so empty?
What are you doing in my space?

What Not To Wear at Costco

Posted by Allan in Prose on September 12, 2010 4:07 pm

To no one’s surprise, I rarely give too much thought regarding what I wear while shopping. That said, there are a couple of fashion mistakes that I have been very mindful to avoid: I try not to wear wear yellow or blue shirts when shopping at Best Buy, nor red shirts with khaki pants when going to Target. This morning, I realized that shopping Costco with a red shirt is equally awkward.

With Sarah a couple of feet behind me, I was on one knee consulting a list of printers and their corresponding cartridges inconveniently placed on a lower shelf. An older couple pushed a shopping cart down the aisle and the female of the species directed the following query at me: “excuse me, do you carry external hard drives?”

Now, I understood the cause for confusion. I was wearing what looked like a Costco employee uniform while appearing to be helpfully looking for toner cartridges for the lovely young lady patiently waiting a few feet behind me. The wife, already amused by the situation, had to contain her laughter when the rest of the conversation happened.

Without missing a beat, I replied “yeah, just further down the aisle — the Seagate Free Agent.”

“The what?”

“Free Agent, just a few more steps down…”

“Oh Free Agent, there it is!”

I then stood up and said “ok, dear, let’s continue shopping!”

From the Groomsman-cam. Unfortunately, I don’t have a lot of footage from my camera but this one seemed interesting.
